We’re done talking about the movies. Now let’s talk about the series.
We have come to the end of our Sports series, exploring four films from directors Gina Prince-Bythewood, Karyn Kusama, Catherine Hardwicke, and Mira Nair. All told, we covered Love & Basketball, Girlfight, Lords of Dogtown, and Queen of Katwe. So what did we – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – think about not just the films but the series as a whole? In this Retake episode, we’ll look at our history with sports, how these sports films largely feel like they fit in with our last series about Coming of Age films, what the films have to say about women in sports (at least basketball, boxing, and chess), and the nature of biopics in these films.
We also rank all of the films on Flickchart, and interestingly end up with two smack-dab in the middle.
It was a great series – easily one worth continuing down the road. It’s a great fit into our 11th season with all films directed by women. Next up – Mads & Susanne. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins!
