In episode 115, Pete and Andy briefly talk about Wally Pfisters’ directorial debut during their weekly trailer picks. In their discussion Andy stated that often when a director of photography steps into the role of the director that the results can be “not a very good movie”.
He cites Barry Sonnefeld as an example of one that has successfully made the transition to directing.
Others that have made a solid career as a director include:
Jan de Bont
de Bont made his mark on American films as the cinematographer on films such as Die Hard, Black Rain, Flatliners, and Basic Instinct. He then transitioned into the role of director, making his debut with Speed (1994) and followed that with Twister (1996)
