Minute 112 – We Put Cold, Unlovable B**ches Like Us On A Bagel!

Waymond calls out across the chaos — Evelyn, please, no more — and she lets go of Deirdre’s throat. The script said “no more fighting.” The film cuts the last word, and it changes everything: he’s not asking her to stop swinging, he’s asking her to stop being the kind of person who would. Jobu, already walking away, stops and turns back to watch, visibly furious that her mother might be learning something. She raises a foot over Evelyn’s face, moves it aside at the last second, and steps over her toward the stairs. Deirdre detaches the blade from an industrial paper cutter and comes back swinging. And then: Evelyn sitting down outside the laundromat, next to Deirdre, asking what her silly husband said. Deirdre tells her about the day her husband served her papers and she drove his Kia Forte through the neighbor’s kitchen. And then the line: it’s cold, unlovable bitches like us who make the world go round.

We dig into the villain trope Lester loves most — the one where the hero’s kindness makes the villain angrier, because being proven wrong this late means reckoning with everything you’ve already done. He also tells the story of the best villain death he’s ever seen, from a 1983 Osamu Tezuka movie about a baby unicorn, which has stuck with him since he was five. Plus: the cut lines from the 2022 script that the performances made unnecessary, why “my ex gave me the papers” became “my husband gave me the papers,” why “hysterical” was correctly removed from the famous line, and the specific horror of sitting on the same side of the desk as your nemesis.

Lester and Kynan attempt to explain, evaluate, enlighten and elucidate the Academy Award-winning film, Everything Everywhere All At Once, minute by multiversal minute!
