Marvel Movie Minute hiatus: Captain America ( 1990)

Hiatus • Captain America (1990)

For this hiatus episode, we’re looking at Albert Pyun’s 1990 film Captain America starring Matt Salinger, Ronny Cox, Ned Beatty, Darren McGavin, Scott Paulin, and Kim Gillingham.

There had been a Captain America serial in the 40s. There had been the two Captain America TV movies in 1979. So why are we starting here? Is it because it has a bit of a notorious history? Or because it’s so laughably bad? Perhaps all of the above?

It’s Menahem Golan producing this under his 21st Century Film Corporation banner. If you know the name Golan (often part of Golan/Globus) or the director Pyun, you pretty much know what you’re getting here. They’re behind some terrible genre films that are often straight to video.

What do we think of Red Skull? Why is he Italian though? And why do we have a Sharon but no Peggy? And what’s with the evil villain team they credit as Perfect Young Italians? Oof. It’s nonsense. Still, we have a great conversation about it.

This is on YouTube at the moment so you can watch it there (if you dare), but you may have more fun just skipping it and tuning in. So enjoy!  This is a member bonus episode. Consider becoming a member so you can tune in!

We could do this all week.

Andy Nelson and Pete Wright pick up the Infinity Saga Phase I mantle with Captain America: The First Avenger one patriotic minute at a time.
