A Blow to the Head

Minute Eighty Six: From Black Widow Nailing Hawkeye to Thor Bouncing Along the New Jersey Shore

Playwright Dean O’Carroll joins us in this episode!

In the eighty-sixth minute of The Avengers

While Thor falls from the helicarrier, we cut to Natasha and Clint mid-fight. Again, why is the helicarrier so seemingly unpopulated? Where is everyone? Sure, this is a narrow corridor in the engine room, but with thousands of people on board, surely someone is here?

Regarding the fight, why does this one seem so lackluster? Is it the direction? The cinematography? The fight choreography? The performances? Hard to say. It just doesn’t grab us. But then again, perhaps for a fight between two non-supers, that was the intention? It’s just disappointing because it really feels like they could deliver a bit more. The fight ends with Natasha clocking Clint after he seems to possibly be coming out of his mind control.

And that sends us back to the skies over New Jersey with Thor, still trapped in the cell as he works to gain some leverage so he can use Mjølnir to break free. Luckily, he does just as it’s about to smash on the shore, and Thor skips across the field like a stone in a pond. Tune in!
