CATFA 063: Science and Alarms

Minute Sixty-Three: From Morita’s Retort to Zola’s Recognition

Joining us, we have Matthew Fox, the voice behind The Ethical Panda and our host from last season!

In the sixty-third minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger

We talk a bit about Schmidt’s plans and Zola’s seeming change between here and in The Winter Soldier. Is there much logic to any of it? And why don’t they care more that they have to destroy this whole factory? Could they have figured out a plan that didn’t require them to blow it all up? How much has Hydra succeeded the way Marvel’s used them in their films and shows? There’s certainly plenty of talk about Red Skull and his motivations in this minute, including why all the self-destruct timers are set at seven minutes.

Why is it that Dum Dum Dugan seems to be the one given all the personality so far of the Howling Commandos? We do talk a bit about Gabe Jones, his role here, and his comic background.

We try to figure why Schmidt seeing Captain America triggers him to hit all the self-destruct buttons. What is it about seeing this person fighting tells him it’s a super soldier? Did the USO market him as a super soldier?

Lots of things that bother us in this minute. Lots to think about for sure. Tune in!

We could do this all week.

Andy Nelson and Pete Wright pick up the Infinity Saga Phase I mantle with Captain America: The First Avenger one patriotic minute at a time.
