William S. Burroughs acknowledged that his novel “Naked Lunch” was loosely structured, one of the many reasons people said it was unfilmable. That didn’t stop writer/director David Cronenberg, who decided to take on the task of adapting the book. He did it with Burroughs’ blessing, who agreed with Cronenberg that the adaptation would include elements from Burroughs’ other works, as well as his own life. That loose adaptation became Cronenberg’s 1991 film Naked Lunch, which is as much an exploration of Burroughs’ search for the creativity to write through a horrific moment in his own life as it is a surreal look at addiction.
