Minute Six: From Schmidt’s Big Entrance to a Fake Tesseract
Joining us on the show today and all week, we have Kurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast.
In the sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger…
We play the IMDb game with Schmidt (or is it Shmidt?) himself, Aussie actor Hugo Weaving. This is his big reveal, after all. Well, as Weaving with a human face. You know what we mean.
We chat about his conversation with the Tower Keeper, and of course talk about the trope of the villain’s “we’re two sides of the same coin” speech. There seem to be Hydra logos everywhere, by the way. Schmidt’s buttons, his hat, his lapel pin.
Then we get to see just how strong he is. That lid on the sarcophagus his troops couldn’t budge? He pushes off with one small heave. So there’s clearly something going on with this guy. He reveals the dead Nordic King mummified inside the sarcophagus, and what’s it holding?
Lo and behold! Is that the Tesseract? He calls is such, but then the minute ends.
Quite the cubic cliffhanger. Tune in!
