Minute Twenty-One: From Breaking In Gilmore to Colonel Phillips’ Monologue
Joining us on the episode is Father David Mowry, chaplain of the movies-by-minutes community!
In the twenty-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger…
It’s Agent Peggy Carter! And who is that talking back to her? It’s Gilmore Hodge, of course. Even this small character was pulled from the comics, and we talk about him. And the actor’s name is Lex Shrapnel, which sounds like it’s from the comics. But back to Carter. It’s Hayley Atwell! We love her as this character. Apparently, there was a jiu jitsu joke at one point. We’re glad it’s not here. But we look at her comic background as well as a few other actors considered for the role. And we love that she does deliver a great punch to Gilmore.
What were those clipboards they were filling out? Turns out those are last wills and testaments for the recruits. Yowza. That leads us to question to entire conceit that they’re recruiting essentially privates – newbies – instead of soldiers who have already proven themselves in the field of battle. Sure, there’s an element to the concept of finding the ‘weak link,’ but it does seem a bit strange.
And did you know that Bucky was the camp mascot for Camp Lehigh? That’s where we first meet him in the comics, and also where he first discovers Steve’s secret that he’s Captain America. Ah, the good ol’ days of secret identities.
We debate the start of the relationship between Steve and Peggy. She doesn’t even register him here. We wonder how strong their connection is. Is it only because he’s strong later? Does she have an attraction to him at this point? Or is she just looking at him as a great option for their recruitment?
Tommy Lee Jones makes his entry in the film as Colonel Phillips and we look at his career as well as the character he plays here. We also chat about the SSR and the ranks. How are all of these people fitting into this hierarchy? There’s a General Patton quote we discuss, and we get to see how Col. Phillips reacts to the scrawny Steve.
And we get a montage! Tune in!
