Minute Eighty: From Surprise at Peggy to Surprise in the Treetops

Joining us today, we have Jason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’.

In the eightieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger

We close our chat about Peggy after shooting at Steve to ‘test’ his shield and how Steve and Howard exchange notes on his uniform. It’s interesting compositionally how Johnston shot it and we enjoy it. We also talk about the final reveal of Captain America in his official uniform as we kick off the montage. Why did they decide to reveal him after already having fought? We do see bullet scorch marks on the shield, after all. And why is it that Captain America gets a uniform but every other superhero has outfits or suits?

We talk about his teaming up with the Howling Commandos and why we like them being part of his team in this particular story and the sense of them representing the American melting pot. And we chat about the nature of war comics.

But where do they attack? And how much time is passing? It’s a great montage to start talking about. Tune in!
