CATFA 107: Breaking the Fourth (Romance) Wall

Minute 107: From Plane Plans to Last Talk

Joining us, it’s Heidi Bennett from Vibrant Visionaries!

In the one hundred seventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger

Cap tries to figure out how to pilot the plane but pretty much decides he’s just going to have to crash her. Whaaaa??? And Colonel Phillips seems okay with this, asking Morita to exit the room with him so Steve and Peggy can have a moment together.

None of this makes a lick of sense. Okay, sure, it’s there for the romance and the tragic end the film has to have, but doesn’t it feel written? It boils down to how much you buy into the love story and can look past things like Steve forgetting he has drop planes he could escape in, or perhaps trying to land the plane on the ice. But it’s romantic, so romance wins I guess, right?

Regardless, we have a blast digging into this minute. Tune in!
