In 1987, Spanish filmmaker Bigas Luna ventured into the horror genre with an innovative approach to storytelling. Working with a budget of $2 million, Luna crafted a unique narrative that would blend psychological horror with commentary on cinema itself. Despite its limited theatrical release and modest box office returns (to be generous), the film would go on to win several awards and be nominated for others. The film follows John Pressman (Michael Lerner), a troubled ophthalmologist’s orderly whose overbearing mother (Zelda Rubinstein) exercises an unusual amount of control over his life.
