Independence Day • Member Bonus

"Once again, the LAPD is asking Los Angelenos not to fire their guns at the visitor spacecraft. You may inadvertently trigger an interstellar war.”

Independence Day changed the direction of Hollywood Blockbusters for years after, shifting films into larger scale disasters with epic stories. Unfortunately, it also proved that audiences were fine with cliché characters and weak plots as long as the movie was fun and bombastic. To a certain extent, that also continued with Hollywood Blockbusters (though it can be argued that’s largely been a part of the Blockbuster long before Independence Day came along). Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we bring you a member bonus episode that’s a return to our Holiday series to celebrate the American Independence Day, the 4th of July, and something that loosely fits into our original science fiction series (even if it had a recent sequel).

Our episode about Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day is a member bonus episode. We’d love it if you would become a member so you could listen to this episode and more! Each month, we release a member bonus episode in which we discuss a film from a previous series (this one fits both into our periodic holiday series as well as our original sci-fi series). We also release a Flickchart Re-Ranking episode in which we re-rank the chart of all the movies we’ve discussed on the show over on Flickchart to shake things up a bit. Members also have access to additional Discord channels, early releases of every episode, and more. Learn more about supporting The Next Reel Film Podcast through your own membership — visit TruStory FM.

A show about movies and how they connect.

When the movie ends, our conversation begins. We love movies. We’ve been talking about them, one movie a week, since 2011. It’s a lot of movies, that’s true, but we’re passionate about origins and performance, directors and actors, themes and genres, and so much more. So join the community and let’s hear about your favorite movies, too.
