Bruce Joel Rubin’s screenplay for Jacob’s Ladder had been making its rounds for nearly a decade before Adrian Lyne read it and latched on to it. After Fatal Attraction, he had been looking for the right project to do. He had been tapped to do the adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities, which certainly fits within his psychological/sexual storytelling, but Rubin’s script drew him in and he opted to hop over to this instead. (Plus, Carolco Pictures was giving him more directing freeom, which surely was a selling point.) He turned out a twisted, Cronenbergian, dark psychological film that works exceptionally well, even if it does leave us with some questions.
