We’re done talking about the movies. Now let’s talk about the series.
We have come to the end of our 10 Year Anniversary series, exploring 10 films from directors Muriel & Delphine Coulin, Miranda July, Marco Dutra & Juliana Rojas, Dee Rees, Céline Sciamma, Lynne Ramsay, Nadine Labaki, Zoya Akhtar, Ann Hui, and Sarah Smith, as well as the member bonus episode’s director Sloane U’Ren. All told, we covered 17 Girls, The Future, Hard Labor, Pariah, Tomboy, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Where Do We Go Now?, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, A Simple Life, and Arthur Christmas. We also talked about Dimensions: A Line, a Loop, a Tangle of Thread as our member bonus episode. On top of that, we returned to where we started with a new review of Raiders of the Lost Ark, the very first film we talked about on this podcast 10 years ago. So what did we – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – think about not just the films but the series as a whole? How do these films hold up a decade later? Are there any common threads between these films celebrating their 10 year anniversaries? We have a great conversation about these thirteen directors and their eleven films.
Here’s a hint at what we talk about in our 10 Year Anniversaries series Retake.
How well have these films stuck with us? What sort of common threads have we been able to find? Interestingly, there are a lot of family themes running throughout the lot. And is it weird that almost every one of these films feature an animal in some capacity? Or is that just us? We rank all of the films on Flickchart. Our middle block continues to thwart many great films from ascending to the upper half, but it is what it is. It certainly did feel like a lot of Flickchart hate crimes occurred as we ranked these eleven films from our 10 Year Anniversaries series. We really enjoyed this series, and most notably were surprised by Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, our first Bollywood film! That being said, We Need to Talk About Kevin is the top of this list. All in all, it’s great getting these films added to our library of film conversations. Next up – we continue exploring the films of Hong Kong writer/director Ann Hui!
